Reflecting on 2021

Truth be told, I hate writing Medium articles mainly because I feel like I have nothing of value to actually say. But, I’m viewing this one through the lens of archiving my 2021 so it’s bearable.

This year was probably one of, if not the most eventful year of my life thus far. I achieved a lot in regards to career development, education and personal development as well.

At the start of this year, I was quite directionless aside from knowing I eventually wanted to work in either UX Design or Front-End Development.

This was pretty ambitious since I failed Computer Science A-Level but regardless, God finds a way.

I enrolled on a Digital Media BA in February, barely attended lectures and used my student finance to pay for Love Circular. It was a pretty easy decision to make and I don’t regret it at all, but regardless, the Monzo notification made me vomit.

Alongside completing Love Circular, I also chose to undertake a mentorship programme with Out In Tech. I had both these things going on simultaneously and while it was a lot at times, the experience I gained and the connections I made were invaluable. I was blessed to be paired with an amazing mentor and I credit a large part of my success this year to her.

During Love Circular, I completed my first UX project at a start-up, it was stressful at times due to the sheer amount I had on my plate alongside being sole UX Designer and I was under a lot of pressure.

Thankfully I came out largely unscathed aside from one *small* hospital visit. I had become pretty burnt out due to my workload and I learned the value of rest very quickly.

I worked for two more start-ups prior to my current role, one was a great experience and one, not so great. Irregardless, I’m thankful for both experiences.

I got confirmation of an offer for my current role on my 21st birthday; arguably the best birthday I’ve ever had.

I love my company, my manager, my team and everything about my job, honestly.

Prior to getting my job, I also started my dream uni course. No grades, just portfolio and vibes got me an unconditional offer. Blessings.

Outside all of this, I finished CBT therapy plus started taking fluoxetine this summer and I can honestly say both were worth it, first two weeks of fluoxetine were hellish though.

I also chose to become a mentor with Black Girls in Tech and my mentee said I’m amazing 🥲.

Oh, and today I got paid for 3D work for the first time ever.

All in all, this year was a great year despite some of the hardships I faced and I’m glad I chose to keep persevering.

In regards to the coming year, I need to finish a Web Development bootcamp application plus continue learning new software for both 2D and 3D animation. Plus somehow get my degree.

It won’t necessarily be enjoyable and if anything it will probably be a lot of headache but nonetheless I’ll get it done.

Virgo Mars, I have to.

I’m also aiming to write more Medium articles next year alongside creating content in general, hopefully this is the start of that.

Thank you for reading because I know I wouldn’t have.

Bye ❤️.
